Research Log: Rio de Janeiro

I had a lot of fun researching my romantic suspense, Denied Origin, the main reason being that I got to learn a lot of useless information about places I'd never been - the first of which was Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where heroine, Valentina Tuttora lives. In a matter of days, she and hero, Mark Welles, are swept across the globe on a scavenger hunt for clues to her real identity with a deadly terrorist stalking them every inch of the way. I needed a strong launching point, geographically, for this story and Rio de Janeiro turned out to be the perfect place!

Here's a glimpse through Mark's eyes....

Mark Welles arrived at Rio de Janeiro’s International Airport on a friend’s private jet at ten-thirty that bright Sunday morning. As he stepped out, he had to blink under the blinding rays of the sunlight. He took his sunglasses out of his shirt pocket and put them on, scanning the signs taxi drivers held up in search of his own name.

The taxi drove him from the airport into the bustling, crowded streets of the Brazilian city. As they drove through the working class suburbs, the threads of his memory began to spin together. He had been gifted with a vivid memory and then had been trained to sharpen it, whittle it until it was a fine, keen blade all its own. But being here—seeing it all again—made him remember everything.
Everything.

He sat back in his seat as a ping of pain lanced through him. He exhaled sharply through his nostrils as he turned away from the streets which led the taxi into the south side neighborhood where glitzy houses stood to face the stunning, blue sea.

Now he remembered why he’d never come back here. It was too painful, unbearably so—just as he’d feared it would be.

The taxi reached his hotel on the beach close to an hour after his plane touched down. He checked in and went up to his beach-front room. The single bed was made and the sheets underneath the coverlet were fresh. The room smelled of salt and soap.

He set his bag aside and went to the glass doors which led out onto a small, square balcony. He looked down at Copacabana Beach and studied the beach crowd—the sunbathers, the kids playing in the surf, the active playing beach soccer or volleyball.

He turned away and went back to his bag. He unzipped the front pouch and shuffled through the clothes until he found his gun. He took it out, laid it on the bed along with his knife and holster. He propped his foot on the bed and pulled up his pant leg. He strapped the holster around his calf and sheathed the gun into place.

He tucked the knife readily into his pocket. He went to the door, stuffing his room key in his right back pocket.

It was time to retrace his steps.

It was time to go to work.

First, some general facts about Rio. The city itself was founded in 1565 and is home to over six million people, most of whom are Catholic and speak Portuguese. The handiest Rio factoid that fit well into Denied Origin's storyline is the high crime rate. In 2007, there was an average of 30 homicides victims per week, most of which were a result of mugging, stray bullets, and narcoterrorism. Rio is ranked 206 of the most violent cities in Brazil (5565 total). The city is like a comic book metropolis with urban warfare a daily (or nightly) reality between drug lords, outlaws, and police.

The climate of Rio is tropical, due to its location near the equator and on the Atlantic Ocean, but because of cold fronts from Antartica, weather changes are frequent. In the summer, flooding and landslides are common. In industrial production, Rio is ranked 2nd nationally and it is the 2nd richest city in Brazil. Most interesting of all, Rio is the cultural and tourist capital of Brazil. And with nearly 50 miles of beachland, including the famous Copacabana, is it really any wonder? Dance, sports, yachting and martial arts are all very popular. For rock climber, Rio is a haven as it is surrounded by hills and beautiful mountains. Corcovado Mountain is home to the breathtaking Christ the Redeemer statue. Sugarloaf Mountain rising above the harbor is so named because its resemblence to the traditional shape of loaf sugar.

Rio is known worldwide for its Carnival, created with a masked ball in 1840. To this day, parades and civilians in ornate costumes celebrate Brazilian music and the last days of Lent. Millions of people travel to Rio for its New Years festivities, including spectacular fireworks display - one of the largest in the world - over Copacabana Beach.

In Denied Origin, Amber Leigh Williams spins a nice tale of suspense, during which the reader is taken on a journey around the world in several days. This is a fast-paced story that keeps the reader on the edge of the seat and guessing. The action and sexual tension keep the reader wondering, waiting, and wanting more. Characters are engaging and smart, and if you like to try to figure out a mystery, this is a great challenge and addition to your to buy list. There are a couple of gripping plot twists that’ll surprise you, but they make perfect sense in the end, once a series of astounding secrets are revealed. I can only imagine Amber Williams will get better and better and be well read. Her creativity is obvious with this appropriately-named, highly-charged, danger-filled setting and story. Watch for her future works. She’s an amazing writer. No doubt about it.

Book Dive #1 cont... DENIED ORIGIN

Welcome to Day 2 of Denied Origin's book dive! Location was so important to the crafting of this story. To help dive further into DO, here's the book trailer and an exlusive excerpt!

Denied Origin takes the characters across the globe in a matter of days, starting in Brazil then fleeing to the coast of Greece. From there, they go to Rome, Egypt and more! Mark and Valentina are shuffled from location to location. Why not include really exciting places like Copacabana Beach, Vatican City, and the Taj Mahal? The research was fascinating!
One of my goals was to add a tidbit of trivia about every location embedded in the text. This way, I hope readers learn more about each location, too. Also each locale had a mood of its own that added a flavor to the story. Meshed together, all the different cultures made DO a story not quite like any other. The only location that doesn't acutally exist is the final destination, which is one of the story's secrets. Not even the characters know until the last minute where or what it is. They learn as the reader does.
This was the one book that I did fly by the seat of my pants while plotting. All I knew was each location and the characters. And I didn't do research ahead of time. As the characters traveled, so did I through my research to make the travelling all that more realistic:
As the train pulled into the station, Valentina stirred. It was midmorning and the sun was out, bright and full. She squinted out the window at Agra. “Are we getting off?”
Mark nodded distractedly as he rose to get their luggage. He threw the duffel over his shoulder before helping her to her feet. He tucked an arm around her shoulders. “Don’t leave my side,” he whispered as they wandered into the station.
He kept his eyes sharp. A sniper could be perched just out of view, a knife could be held just out of sight, a suicide bomber could be waiting to jump forth. His eyes passed over every face, studied them, judged them. He checked over his shoulder many times to make sure no one was following them. “We’ll go straight there.”
“Good,” she muttered. He knew she was also watching the crowd nervously. “The sooner we leave this place the better.”
He didn’t relax, but slowly began to take in the sights as they walked quickly through the city streets. They walked through a large bazaar where the smell of spices was so strong he could almost feel them filtering through his lungs as he breathed deep to admit them. There
weren’t many cars. There was the occasional elephant, more than a few horse-drawn carts, and various bicyclists.

All the people were tan with exotic eyes and peasant dress though they had a carefree air, a sense of peace and gratification. They’d been walking for some time when they came to a crowded iron bridge.
“Are we close?” She pressed close to Mark’s side as they squeezed into the traffic on the bridge.
He nodded, his eyes darting every which way, searching for the glare of a weapon. “This is the Yamuna River. The Taj is just across the bridge.”

After wriggling their way through the suffocating crowd, they broke out into the sunlight again. As soon as she saw the monument in the distance, she let out a surprised gasp. “Oh, Mark…”

He couldn’t help but grin at her surprise. “It’s even better up close and personal, huh?”
Her gasp melded fluidly into an awestruck sigh. “Oh, it’s gorgeous—more than I imagined.”

“We have to go through the south entrance,” Mark advised, guiding her onward. “Not much further.”
They passed through a red sandstone gate into the spacious gardens. Facing south at the northern tip of the gardens in the very center stood the magnificent temple. Its white marble structure was situated perfectly on a red sandstone platform.
In the morning light, the monument was as white and elegant as a bride. Though light fog had descended into the lower parts of the garden, the Taj speared through it, boasting its feminine majesty to the world.

Book Dive #1: DENIED ORIGIN

This week I'm going to be doing something special, kind of a lead-in to my next book launch (Bet It On My Heart) on March 3. A "book dive" is a deeper and exclusive look into a story. Today we're diving into Denied Origin....

Title: Denied Origin
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Publisher: The Wild Rose Press
Release Date: August 2008
Available in: Ebook and paperback

Original Concept: When crafting DO, I foresaw a fast-paced, heart-pounding race across the globe. I basically asked myself what places I wanted to learn more about and crafted DO around them.

Little Known Fact: The first draft was called "To Die For." It remained the working title of the story until I revised and submitted to TWRP, "Denied Origin" popped into my head. It was the last puzzle piece and the editors liked it so I went with that.

Why "Denied Origin"? Every story has one main protagonist and this is usually the character who changes the most. In this one, the heroine Valentina goes through a complete identity crisis. All her life, she's been told that she's a Brazilian heiress. Then her parents die and she's a wanted woman and she has no idea why, nor will she find out until she goes on this scavenger hunt for clues across the globe with a stranger, a bodyguard named Mark Welles. Throughout the book, she is denied origin - which is exactly why the revised title was the last piece of the story's puzzle.

Cover Artist: Rae Monet

Cover Fact: DO took home to October 2008 Covey Cover Award (Thanks, Rae!!!)
______________________

Hero Name: Mark Welles

Hero Occupation: Retired military, retired FBI, retired bodyguard/bulletcatcher (Valentina is his last guard job)

Hero Description:
It isn’t Herve. She knew it when she ran her gaze over the strong, braced shoulders covered in a white T-shirt which he wore over jeans. He was tall, so tall. Well over six feet. His waist was trim, his build athletic, rangy. His hair was dark and long. It was just long enough to be
secured in the small band at the nape of his neck. From her angle, she saw he had a strong nose and a full mouth. He looked slightly angelic but dangerous all-the same. She shivered and couldn’t decide if it was from fear or excitement.

Hero's Stunt Double: DO was my third full-length novel and then I did tend to use physical muses when crafting heroes/heroines. For both Mark and Valentina, however, I didn't need them. They came to me so fully-formed. But if I had to decide, the only actor who could do this alpha justice would be Gerard Butler.

Hero's Greatest Strength: ability to think on his feet

Hero's Greatest Weakness: lays too much blame on himself

Hero's Astrological Sign: Capricorn (This sign is: Stable, serious, and confident... Loves structure and order. Capricorns are stubborn, determined, and ambitious.... A natural goal setter who accomplishes a lot when working under definite guidelines.... They can be very pessimistic, melancholic, and even unhappy. They need to learn that not everything is under their control and that it’s fine from time to time to relax and to let go of their worries.)
__________________

Heroine Name: Valentina Tuttora

Heroine Occupation: Charity emcee, heiress

Heroine Description:

Her hair fell in long, black curls halfway down the length of her back. She usually wore it straight, but it’d dried into careless curls. He liked it better that way. It fell around her oval-shaped face with its naturally-tanned skin, heart-shaped mouth, perfect nose, and dark, dark eyes. Her eyes were the same color he remembered but deeper, more knowledgeable than before.... His admiration for her doubled when he saw she didn’t eye him with fear but with curiosity and a bit of irresistible challenge.
Heroine's Stunt Double: Salma Hayek

Heroine's Greatest Strength: encounters insurmountable odds and still manages to keep moving forward

Heroine's Greatest Weakness: pride/stubbornness

Heroine's Astrological Sign: Leo (This sign is: Creative and ambitious.... love to be the center of attention, and they often are because they are so enthusiastic, courageous, loyal, and generous.... need to learn to tame their pride and to be less vain.... love to give without asking, often assuming their gift is "truly needed")

What Sets This Book Apart: Though DO is a romantic suspense, it isn't a conventional RS. It has a villain, taut chapters, elements of danger but the characters are led on a unique journey and wind up in an unexpected place.

Favorite Scene:
#1 - After their first-meet, Mark handcuffs Valentina to a bed to keep her from running away from him.

#2 - Sweet but sexually-charged scene after Valentina is injured, in which Mark helps Valentina dry off after a bath.

Blurb:
Former FBI agent and bodyguard Mark Welles’s career and life are going downhill until he meets Marcisso Tuttora, the man his father died protecting years ago. Wealthy businessman Marcisso puts the life of his only child, Valentina, in Mark’s hands by asking him to return to Rio de Janeiro to guard her.
Less than a week later, Marcisso and his wife are murdered in their beds, and Valentina is running for her life for reasons she cannot begin to guess until she meets Mark Welles. A stubborn heiress to an oil fortune and the son of a highly decorated soldier, they must find a way to escape the country without getting caught and find out why they are chased by a deadly terrorist. In a matter of weeks, they are driven into a scavenger hunt across the globe laid out by Valentina’s parents and embark on a passionate, emotional journey as exhilarating and intense as the race for their lives.
What People Are Saying:
This is a fast-paced story that keeps the reader on the edge of the seat and guessing. The action and sexual tension keep the reader wondering, waiting, and wanting more.... These characters are engaging and smart, and if you like to try to figure out a mystery, this is a great challenge and addition to your to buy list. There are a couple of gripping plot twists that’ll surprise you, but they make perfect sense in the end, once a series of astounding secrets are revealed, especially the big one.... I can only imagine Amber Williams will get better and better and be well read. Her creativity is obvious with this appropriately-named, highly-charged, danger-filled setting and story. Watch for her future works. She’s an amazing writer. No doubt about it.

SNIPPET:

Her throat still burned when she fought through the waves of unconsciousness, but she was no longer cold or choking.

She was warm, wrapped in blankets. Her hand fisted in a rough-textured spread. She smelled soap and salt. When she turned her head and opened her eyes, she saw she was lying on a pillow. In a bed.

Warm . She sighed, stretching before opening her eyes. It was still dark, but she could see vaguely around the room. A single bed, a single chest of drawers, an entertainment center, a bathroom. To the right, there was a balcony door.

The figure of a man stood before it.

Her heart bolted into her throat at the sight of the silhouette. It isn't Herve . She knew it when she ran her gaze over the strong, braced shoulders covered in a white T-shirt which he wore over jeans. He was tall, so tall. Well over six feet. His waist was trim, his build athletic, rangy. His hair was dark and long. It was just long enough to be secured in the small band at the nape of his neck. From her angle, she saw he had a strong nose and a full mouth.

He looked slightly angelic but dangerous all-the-same. She shivered and couldn't decide if it was from fear or excitement.

She sat up. The sheets rustled and the mattress groaned. She saw him stiffen, brace. The quick reaction made her pause. She saw his hand rush to his belt and then fall away. As he turned to face her, her heart pounded in her ears.

Yellow Rose: Blackest Heart

America's Sweetheart, Stella Ridge has been away from Wayback for fifteen years paving her way to the top of the acting business. When a car accident leaves her physically and emotionally scarred, the only place she wants to go is home to Texas and her family's ranch.

The changes that have taken place since her departure are enough to rock her world again. She uncovers a buried tragedy, struggles with the penetrating stares and questions from townsfolk, and comes up against an intriguing and unexpected spark with the silent cowboy and champion bull rider, Judd Black. Their wounded souls draw them together and Stella begins to realize that only in him can she find the solace she sought by leaving the bright lights of Hollywood.

SNIPPET:

Eight seconds. Judd had done it before. He was ready to do it again.

His black Stetson was pulled low, casting his eyes in shadow from the bright arena lights. His jaw clenched tight. He flexed his gloved hand, waiting for Jack to settle down long enough for him to hop on.

Jack gave a snort then calmed. Judd didn’t wait for Wade’s okay. He jumped onto Jack’s back. Wade worked quickly to strap his hand in place. Jack quivered underneath him and pawed the ground. He jerked forward, anticipating freedom. Judd squeezed his thighs tight around Jack’s wide flank. The animal was ready to rip loose. The bull’s ripe scent stung his nostrils.

“Here we go,” Wade slapped Judd’s arm.

Judd lifted his hand in the air.

Wade motioned the man holding the chute’s gate. He stepped back, the gate swung open, and the crowd roared as Judd and Jack came flying out of the chute.
Eight seconds seemed like forever. Jack was mad and proving it. His hind legs kicked up. Judd held on, trying to anticipate Jack’s wild movements. His arm was in the air, body bowing back and forth with Jack’s movements. The seconds stretched. As if sensing Judd’s victory, Jack began to whirl around, desperate to buck him off.

The clock buzzer went off, signaling eight seconds. The crowd came to its feet, clapping and hollering. Judd yanked his hand out of the leather strap, slid off Jack’s back, and backed away from the bull. Apparently, Jack wasn’t ready to give in to the humiliation. He charged after Judd, horns down, snorting.
The crowd screamed. Judd took off as fast as he could for the nearest wall. He heard Jack’s hooves pounding through the dirt after him. He dove for the wall, climbed up as fast as he could and grabbed the rail.

His gloved hand slipped off the rung. He felt himself falling back. A hand latched over the back of his, slim and white, but strong. He grabbed onto the rail as the rescuing hand tugged hard, helping him pull himself up just as Jack plowed into the wall below him. The crowd cheered as he came safely into view, barely escaping injury or worse. Glancing down, he saw the handlers chasing after Jack who was still in no mood to be tamed. He looked around to see who’d helped him out.

His adrenaline-pumped heart stammered to a halt. The pale face shadowed by the ball cap was a woman’s. As he stared into the familiar, muted green eyes and realization washed through him, his hand almost slipped on the rail again. His lungs seized, halting his panting breaths.

He’d seen her many times over the past fifteen years but only in movie theaters and on television.

God. She was back. Big as life. In the flesh. His mouth went dry when her lips turned up in a soft smile.

“Hey, Judd,” she said in the voice that had made her famous.

His eyes found the thin, pale scar by her mouth. It’d faded to pink since the highly-reported accident and subsequent emergency surgery. There was another scar by her eye, barely noticeable but there marking her perfect face all the same.

She must’ve seen where his eyes had gone. Smile fading, she took a half-step back and looked down. He watched her bend to pick up his Stetson. She dusted off the brim and handed it over the rail. “Lose this?” she asked.

He took it and set it on his head. Unsure of himself, he gave her a short nod then jumped back into the corral.

Walking away from her on numb legs, he looked up and saw Wade running toward him, mouth stretched wide to accommodate his eager grin. “Hell, kid, that was a sweet ride! You and Jack-boy put on a hell of a show. The crowd got their whole money’s worth out of that performance. You okay?”

Hell no.

Champagne Rose: A Summer's Hope

Briar has spent half her life upholding the family business. As another summer rolls around, it looks like her luck is running dry and she’s dangerously close to losing the only thing that matters, Hanna’s Inn, her late mother’s bed and breakfast. Amidst deep financial difficulty, a shaky relationship with her estranged father, and a non-existent social life, hope is all she has left.

Enter Cole, a new guest at Hanna’s. Fresh from the turmoil of a bitter divorce and haunted by his mistakes, he’s desperate for escape. In a matter of weeks he captures the lonely innkeeper’s heart and together they discover a passion as hot as the southern sun and as unstoppable as the bay tide.

Do they dare trust this wellspring of hope they’ve found in each other’s arms?

SNIPPET:

“These are for you.”

“Thank you,” she whispered, taking them. Her heart tugged and her lips curved as she stared down into their wide, bright faces. “They’re my favorite.”

He smiled. “I was hoping. They made me think of you.”

Awed, she lowered her nose to sniff the blooms. “You got them from Adrian?”

He shrugged. “Only the best.”

She nodded in agreement. “I’ll just set them here.” She put them on a bench in the shade of the magnolia tree, and then faced him awkwardly.

“Are you ready?”

“When you are.”

He held up the helmet. “I have to take precautions. I don’t want anything to happen to your pretty face although it’s a shame to cover it up.”

Her insides turned to dough and her heart pattered giddily as he slipped the helmet over her head. She lifted her chin when he motioned for her to do so.

It took him several seconds to secure the strap. “Feel okay?” he asked when he was done, lifting the visor so she could hear him.

She nodded, feeling nerves jump into her stomach again. “Um, Cole? There’s something you need to know.”

He chuckled as he went back to his bike. “I know.”

She stiffened. “You do?”
He nodded, grinning at her as he strapped on his own helmet. He lifted the visor to speak.

“You’ve never ridden a bike before.”

“Is it that obvious?” she asked, rubbing her damp palms on her thighs.

He shrugged, tying the strap under his chin. “Just a little. It’s okay.” He took her hand and pulled her close. She could smell fresh aftershave and the underlying spice of motor oil. It was downright seductive. “Just lean with me into the turns and hold onto me real tight.”

Her knees quaked. “I’m a little nervous.”

He put a hand on her shoulder. “You’ll do fine.” He threw a leg over the seat to straddle it. He gunned the engine and the machine roared to life, stunning her with its raw, wild power. As exhaust smoke tickled her nostrils, she didn’t know if she was really going to be able to go through with this.

He motioned for her to get on.

Now or never. She took a steadying breath, putdown her visor and stepped forward. Gripping his offered hand for balance, she crawled on behind him and put her feet on the passenger pegs.

She hesitantly put her hands on his waist and clutched his shirt as he backed out from under the magnolia.

He looked both ways down Scenic 98 then turned to look at her. “You ready?” he shouted.

She nodded and gave him the thumbs-up.

She saw his quick grin before he hit the accelerator. The force of it sent her back. Her heart pounded with terror as she grabbed him around the waist tight to keep from flying off the open seat.

Happy Holidays!

Yep, that’s giddy me with my beautiful baby! Denied Origin was due out in print mid-November. As a TWRP author, I get one free copy. Only I forgot to inform my publisher that I wanted that free copy until the day of the release, Friday the 14th. I called my mama Monday night to tell her that it hadn’t arrived yet though I’d been waiting by the window with my nose pressed to the glass for the mail-lady to come around every morning. She admitted that Friday she had received not one, not two, but three copies of Denied Origin in print. How in the world did she move mountains and manage an impossible feat like that? Amazon pre-order. *slaps forehead* That easy, huh?

So yours truly waited by the window every morning that week, growing more and more itchy then grumpy then, by Friday when a full week had passed, just plain BAH HUMBUG! I told my dear Jacob, “I’m not waiting by the window today. I’m going to mind my own business, let the morning flit on by like a leaf on the wind, not noticing, then go out after lunch to the mail box and not get let down once more when it doesn’t magically appear.” “Riiiight,” was his know-it-all reply. Now I was on a mission to prove to him and myself that I have some self-restraint. Some. *wink*

I slept in a good while, fixed some brunch, took it to my desk at the back of the house—as far away from the front windows as possible—and sat down to “write.” What really happened is I ended up procrastinating until lunchtime. For some strange reason, I couldn’t hold a sensible thought in my head. I went to fix lunch and somehow my feet got confused and veered toward the front door instead of the kitchen. New house; still get mixed up. *sheepish grin* Across the lawn…to the mail box…open the slot…gasp! OMG! It’s HERE! All the neighbors saw a maniacal, pajama-clad brunette doing the Snoopy dance in her driveway.

The package somehow managed to tear itself into shreds *shrug* by the time I got it to the front door then viola, my baby dropped right into my hands, perfect, touchable, smell-able. I preened it, petted it, hugged it, nuzzled it…then wiped it down so furiously with tissues CSI couldn’t have found even the teeniest remnant of a fingerprint on the shiny surface of that amazing, Covey-Award-winning, Rae Monet cover. I set it carefully on the ottoman, angling it toward the door so Jake would see it as soon as he came in from work. I must’ve picked up the phone a dozen times to call him because I wanted to tell him so bad! But no. Surprise.

When he drove up, I jumped off the barstool I’d been using to angle the overhead lights to spotlight it just so. I couldn’t wait for him to walk himself to the door. I went out in the cold, grabbed him by the arm, yanked him inside and grinned at him wildly. He frowned. “Are you okay?” I gave a shrieking giggle and, unable to restrain myself one more second without joyfully imploding, I spun him toward the ottoman and pointed. Two idiots did the Snoopy dance in the living room. After we wound down, he reached out to grab. And what did I do? Slap. “Don’t touch it!” I squealed, holding it to my chest like a mommy protecting her baby from the BBW. “It’s sensitive,” I added in a whisper. “Riiight.”

Now—at this very moment—my baby stands against the wall of my office, still perfect and untouchable, on top of the snarky printer I forced into semi-permanent hibernation (another story, another time). On occasion—like, um, every five minutes—I glance up, see it, let out a shrieking giggle and start singing, “Merry Christmas to me! Merry Christmas to me! Merry Christmas to meeee! Merry Christmas to mee-eeeeee!”

Hope everyone gets their heart’s sweetest wish this holiday season!!!!!

NeW ExCeRpT!!!

I'm still celebrating Denied Origin's debut! It spent a week on the TWRP bestseller list (http://www.thewildrosepress.com). And...just to let you in on a little secret...there may be even better news concerning the print release. But I'll keep that to myself until it's official :)

*Here's a new nibble for all my blog readers (PG-13):

Valentina heard Mark’s breathing slow, deepen. His eyelashes were long but far from feminine. His mouth was full, sexy. She ran a fingertip over his bottom lip, watched it fall open slightly.

His nose was strong, his skin tan by heritage. She traced them with a fond smile before running a hand through the thick, black mane of his hair.

What was it about him that drew her so strongly?

She remembered the way he’d looked at her in the hotel in Cairo. She’d give anything for him to look at her that way—unguardedly—again.

He cared for her. She drew the knowledge over her like a warm blanket. She followed teasing instinct and brushed her lips over his.

His eyes snapped open. His hand rose between them. His expression was firm.

“Don’t do it.”

“Why not?”

He let out a shaky breath. “There are some lines you can’t turn around and go back to once you’ve crossed them.”

She took the hand that held her back and brought it to her lips. “I don’t want you to stop. I can promise you I won’t want to go back once I’ve crossed the line.”

She leaned toward him again; her lips brushing over his in the lightest of kisses. His eyes narrowed languidly. She savored the tingles spreading through her.

She hummed as they built, deepened.

His eyes were open now and watching. He hadn’t moved. She traced her thumb over his lower lip again and bit her own as it tingled in need. “Kiss me.”

He moved across the space between them and pressed his lips hard over hers.

Hers parted to weld to his. Her breath caught as their breaths mingled. His tongue answered the longing flick of hers. They tangled together, sparking unbelievable bolts of electricity between them.

He rolled over her, trapping her body and mouth underneath his. Sensations welled from deep within her, so deep she could hardly imagine how. Emotions—thick and sweet as honey—excited her beyond pleasure.

He brushed his fingertips over the red lace bodice of her camisole. Under it, her chest rose and fell in quick succession. His hands moved down her sides slowly, igniting need at his touch. She stroked nails over his scalp.

His hum of approval made something boil to the surface of her skin. Her hands trailed over the broad planes of his shoulders, tracing scars over the surface of solid muscles.

She wanted him with an intensity she couldn’t grasp. In total submission, she tipped her head back to invite his lips to the ridge of her jaw and the line of her throat.

He seized the opportunity, nipping the regal ridge with grazing teeth. He pressed his lips to her pulse which was thundering out of control. She could feel his answer, picking up pace until it seemed it could beat no faster or harder.

“Stay with me,” she whispered again, watching his eyes. “Be with me.”

READ THE REVIEWS:
"In Denied Origin, Amber Leigh Williams spins a nice tale of suspense, during which the reader is taken on a journey around the world in several days. This is a fast-paced story that keeps the reader on the edge of the seat and guessing. The action and sexual tension keep the reader wondering, waiting, and wanting more. I can only imagine Amber Williams will get better and better and be well read. Her creativity is obvious with this appropriately-named, highly-charged, danger-filled setting and story. Watch for her future works. She’s an amazing writer. No doubt about it."

Excerpt #3:

“I thought I was too late.”

She shook her head, grinning to soothe the fear she’d seen flicker over his expression with the remembrance. “You couldn’t lose me if you tried.”

“I do everything I know is right to protect you,” he explained carefully. “I’d do everything in my power to keep you alive.”

“I think I’ve seen that.” She ran her knuckles over his cheek where stubble was growing. “Everyone I’ve ever known would’ve given up on me by now. I’ve never known someone so brave and determined. Mark, I’ve never trusted anyone like I trust you.”

He grasped her hand and brought it to his lips. He pressed them into her palm, never taking his eyes from hers. “You don’t know how hard it is for me not to touch you sometimes. You make it so hard for me to resist. It takes everything inside of me to hold back.”

“Why hold back?” she challenged. She cupped his face in her hands and leaned forward until her lips brushed his. She saw his eyes soften, narrow when her lips grazed his ever-so gently. “Do you want it?”

He didn’t pull back, but he didn’t move forward. Uncertain, he lingered, watching her. “Yes,” he admitted. “But I’m ashamed of it. I keep seeing your father standing in the alley asking me to protect you, and I feel so ashamed.”

She pulled him to her. His face pressed into her robed shoulder as she wrapped her arms around him. “There’s nothing to be ashamed of, Mark. Nothing.”

“What would he think if he knew what I want to do to you?”

She heated at the prospect. “What do you want to do to me, Mark?”

He shook his head. “I’ll never tell you. I’d scare you.”

She put a finger under his chin and tilted his face back to hers. “Try me.”

“I can’t.”

“I want you to,” she murmured, pulling him close again. “Kiss me.”

His resolve disappeared, dragging his guard in its retreating wake. He covered her mouth firmly with his. Her head fell back in yield. He didn’t hesitate to take advantage of her submission. He lowered her back to the bed.

The kiss went deeper than they’d gone before. She gave no argument as his teeth nipped over her lips, teasing them open, as his tongue tangled with hers, pulling long, soft sounds from her throat. He pressed his lips to the graceful column and then continued the kissing trail downward, following the opening of the robe. It narrowed down between her breasts and ended at her navel. He pressed a kiss to each bare inch.

When his lips found the base of her belly, she yanked his mouth back up to hers. Her skin was tingling with needs too hot to admit to. The kiss took them deeper, fanning the flame of her desire for him. “Make love to me,” she blurted breathlessly. “Make love to me now. Right now.”

He agreed without reluctance, without a passing thought. He tugged the robe from her shoulder and pressed his lips to it, following the line of it until he reached the darkened bullet wound. He rested there, caressing it with his lips and fingertips.

She turned her lips to his. Her eyes were open, resting on his and her heart pounding when she reached for the open lapels to spread them further.
